In the Valley of Elah (2007)

At its core a murder mystery but interwoven with genre elements are strong messages about the atrocities of war and what it brings regular people to do.  Further, these corrupted men can not turn off their savagery upon returning to the US and as a result everyone suffers.  It's not the anti-war movie I was expecting, but Haggis brings it to a powerful close
